Joey has over 25 years of experience in education administration, serving as assistant principal, elementary, middle school and high school principal, director, and superintendent. He is well-known for improving student academic achievement through the implementation of sustainable systemic changes. His core beliefs are:

- We cannot blame kids
- As leaders we must own everything
Joey is highly involved in the University of California, Davis Superintendent Network where he has participated since 2017. He sees himself as a servant and values a team philosophy.
